LET THE GAMES BEGIN!

We're celebrating the start of the 2012 Olympic Games here early with a round of our own favorite sport: High Performance Building.  This week we officially started the Demolition Decathlon on a sweet EnerPHit project in Sunnyvale, California.  So far this is what we've found: no insulation in the floor or walls, 2" of rigid insulation underneath the existing membrane roof, an unreinforced masonry chimney and surprisingly no termites or dry rot.  That's good news.

As we work through the Demo Decathlon, a personal favorite move will be performing the single-pane, aluminum frame window removal.  Very satisfying!  All parts are fully recyclable, so no waste and no regrets.  Most of the materials we're removing from our building will be fully recycled.  So far we have stucco and chimney bricks filling the dumpster that can all be recycled.  This gives us a great shot at a medal in the Least Landfill category. (No cheering or flag-waving required folks, but thanks anyway.)

Next up: the execution of what we hope will be a winning entry in the Chainsaw Retrofit Rally.  We're already enjoying these 'lympic Games!  Stay tuned to follow the progress.
